Understanding US A2P 10DLC Registration

This article will discuss what A2P 10DLC is and what the process entails

What is A2P 10DLC?:

A2P (Application to Person) 10DLC (10 digit long code) is the standard that United States telecom carriers have put in place to ensure that SMS traffic to US end-users through long code phone numbers is verified and consensual. This standard can be understood as any sort of text messaging (SMS/MMS) that is derived from a software platform and reaches a person's mobile device and leverages a local 10 digit phone number to complete the messaging. Conversely, any sort of texting messaging that originates from a person and reaches another person's mobile device is referred to as "Person to Person" (P2P).

Who Needs To Register For A2P 10DLC?:

Anyone sending SMS/MMS messages over a 10DLC number from a software application to the US must register for A2P 10DLC. Carriers consider any inbound or outbound SMS traffic that does not derive from a person as a "software application", so anyone using a 10DLC number to send SMS messages to the US will need to register. While utilizing a 10DLC number requires a lengthier setup process, it has been shown to result in lower message filtering and higher message throughput. In short, utilizing a 10DLC number often results in more of your messaging making it's way to the intended mobile device without being filtered by the carriers. Please note, that any dealership that contracts with Convergence or one of their approved business partners will automatically be registered properly during the setup process.

What Are The Necessary Steps For A2P 10DLC Registration?:

  1. Create A Profile
  2. Create A Brand
  3. Create A Messenging Service
  4. Create A Campaign
  5. Provision A Local Phone Number

Along with the above steps, a dealership needs to consider the type of campaign they are looking to run and the use cases that the registered campaign might entail. Please note, that it can often seem confusing as to how you should be registering your campaign. Any dealership that contracts with Convergence or one of their approved business partners will have the use cases evaluated and registered properly.

How Do We Get Started?:

The easiest way to begin is by reaching out to one of Convergence's approved business partners. Each business partner has been vetted to ensure that the onboarding process in smooth and all of the preliminary steps to properly register a dealership through the A2P 10DLC process are followed.
